Product Description

Review
Let's go for 'honesty ...' In this handsome celebration of the River Thames the writer and photographer are equal partners, each bringing a unique perception to the subject, but together they create an impressive portrait of the famous river. Waugh followed the river, mostly by bicycle it seems, from its trickling source in Gloucestershire to its broad merging with the North Sea. She talked to many people on the way, seeking out curious conjunctions and byways of chance and history. Stories of princes, adventures, artists and politicians are brought together by their connection with the Thames and the towns and palaces of its banks. The photographer must work with what can be seen at the present and although Waugh is happiest with the river's remoter reaches, the sun rising over calm and misty water, the evening light caressing ancient stonework, the desolation of esturial mudflats, his pictures are rarely less than magnificient and dramatic, presenting the old river in a new light even to those of us who know it well. Downsides are the omission of the sport, commerce and leisure aspects of the river and the omission of the Millennuium Dome site, and a slightly bland textual tone. (Kirkus UK)

5.0 out of 5 stars A book to treasure, for both its photographs and its prose., 10 Dec 2000
By A Customer
Denis and Priscilla have produced a beautiful book. My knowledge of the Thames River was very limited, but now I have a much greater feel for the beauty and history encompassed in its entire length. Priscilla's natural down-to-earth style is easy to understand, and one can't help but be impressed by the amount of research (or her knowledge?) required, and her dedication to the cause. Denis' skills with large format photography, and his patience in capturing the images at the right time, are clearly exhibited. I am very pleased to own this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's the best landscape book I've ever seen., 9 Dec 2000
By A Customer
I love this book. It's so amazingly wonderful, the best book showing the mighty river Thames in all it's glory. It's the perfect book for anyone with an interest in the beauty of the English countryside and the wonder of the river. Both the photographs and the text are informative, evocative and magnificent. Buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars The most complete book on England's most famous river., 24 May 2000
By W. P. Cloutman (London, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Some books on the Thames are all about beautiful photography. Some are all about fine writing. In their 'Searching the Thames', Waugh and Waugh give us both. Superbly well. Denis Waugh's art is in transforming landcape photographs into arresting images and the supplement on the cameras, film, lenses and filters he used to transfer the picture in his mind's eye on to the page is an object lesson to all would-be snappers. Priscilla Waugh's writing is sometimes quirky, sometimes erudite, always accessible and never less than entertaining. Together, they shed new light on the places you know and their vision makes you want to visit the places you don't. 'Searching the Thames' deserves its place in your home; as a reference, as an art book, as the most complete book on England's most famous river.
