5.0 out of 5 stars Compulsive reading for Battleship buffs, 20 Dec 2003
By A Customer
For many novices the KGV class of battleship is maybe a little lesser known than such famous names such as Hood and Warspite, but here they are rightly thrust to the forefront of the modern Royal Navy of the second world war.
The book describes the lives of five ships of the class from design to their end of service with excellent technical details and first hand eye witness reports, all effortlessly brought together by a wonderful running narrative.
With the exception of Prince of Wales which lies at the bottom of the South China Sea, all of these great battleships are now gone. As the sailors who walked their decks grow fewer this book will become an invaluble source of reference to anybody with a thirst for imformation on the ships which literally saved Britain in it's darkest period.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating book, with a broad range of information, 29 Sep 2000
By A Customer
This book details much about the technical specifications of the KGV battleships, their strengths and shortcomings, and also contains a large number of personal reminiscences. In plenty of detail where necessary, it is a very readable account which covers such important events as the sinking of the Hood and Bismarck, Scharnhorst and the sinking of the Prince of Wales and Repulse. I enjoyed it a lot and keep going back to dip into it again.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good historical read, 24 Mar 2000
By A Customer
The book describes a story of the five famous battleships including the less known episodes in a very vivid way. I especially liked plenty of photographs with comments and detailed information on technical specifications and modifications during the ships' service. I consider the ship plan as a weakness of the book, it is very coarse. I would personally prefer a finer one with some plans of various ship compartments e.g. machinery rooms. Anyway, I can recommend this book to any battleship enthusiast.
