Amazon.co.uk Review

Winter in Steven Bradley's garden is not, as elsewhere, a time of quiescence and seasonal torpor to be ignored by gardeners. It is a time of investment in hard work, preparing for the coming seasons of growth and vigour, a true part of the working garden year. It is also a time when the garden offers its own special, if rather austere, pleasures. Winter Gardening is a comprehensive (and beautifully illustrated) guide to the uses to which this neglected season can be put by the resourceful and dedicated gardener. Surprisingly, perhaps, many jobs usually carried out during the rest of the year are actually better done in winter. Steven Bradley provides a "working winter diary" running from late autumn to early spring. He shows how to carry out general garden jobs as well as those to be done with trees, shrubs and climbers; with bulbs and other roots; with lawns and ponds; in the vegetable and fruit garden and in the conservatory. Slotted into this framework are 23 highly practical and specific projects, designed to highlight the range of tasks required by the winter garden. These range from the ambitious (such as building a root vegetable clamp or installing a soil drainage system) to the simple (making a bird feeder or, delightfully, building a shelter for hibernating hedgehogs). Packed with information, advice, and techniques, and drawing on its author's extensive experience as a gardener or teacher, this is an original and trustworthy guide to this neglected part of the garden year, ideal on one hand for experienced gardeners looking to extend their repertoire or, on the other, for novices looking for basic advice and guidance. --Robin Davidson

Product Description

An enormous growth in gardening as a hobby has created demand for gardening subjects of all kinds. There is a limited amount of information available to those who want to use the months between winter and spring as a working part of their year. This book is aimed at those who want to do just that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, a beautiful AND informative gardening book, 5 Dec 2000
By A Customer
How often do you end up disappointed when you open gardening books? They usually fall into one of two camps; either "practical" manuals that have been put together in the early 1970's using tired pen and ink illustrations and reused photography from the publisher's back catalogue, or they are beautifully produced works of art intended to be casually placed on the nation's coffee tables for the benefit of the neighbours.

Winter Gardening is both. It is most definately beautiful but it also has huge amounts of practical help and advice about how to complete winter gardening tasks, such as making a compost bin, putting drainage into clay soil or pollarding trees. The list goes on. This book is not an "impress the neigbours" adornment. It almost makes me want to get out there today (force 8 gales aside) and start on all those jobs I have been carefully avoiding for the last couple of months.

This book is one of those Christmas present purchases you will end up wanting to keep for yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice and easy does it., 14 Dec 2000

"I always thought it funny that hardly anyone has written a book about gardening in winter. After all it does make up four months of the year, and I don't like just sitting indoors looking outside and having to watch Countdown! For those like me who have green finger madness, I want to recommend this highly informative and stylish book for Christmas. You couldn't pick a better present if you know someone who wants to work outdoors, but hasn't the experience or background to realise what needs doing. Everything from coppicing to insulating plants is here for you to follow in easy to understand projects. Apart from the wonderful colourful photography, the one thing I really like is the author's awareness that not everyone will know as much as he does. He doesn't sermonise, but rather makes it easy to comprehend (why leaves fall from trees) and how it fits into the great scheme of things in your garden. The best books I have bought this year by far. Well done all involved."

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Christmas present - full of inspirational ideas, 13 Dec 2000
By A Customer
What a perfect book to come out at this time of year. I have always wanted a book to show me what jobs need doing over winter time. Being a novice gardener I always believed one just stayed indoors at this time of year, but not according to Mr. Bradley! He has packed so much into one book, and the photography is a delight, so much variety. I will be trying to accomplish each of his projects over the next three months, especially the pond maintenance. I can't recommend this book enough, it's made things so much clearer.
