4.0 out of 5 stars The literary equivalent of a rock concert., 4 Feb 2002
By A Customer
This fanzine style text is structured around interviews with female rockers of the early 1990s. These reports create a dynamic sense of what it was to be involved in this particular cultural and social moment, from a uniquely female perspective.
Whether it be in conversation with Courtney Love or Echobelly, Amy Raphael gets to the essence of her subject, determining not only what made each artist enter the male dominated world of rock, but also what enables them to survive there.
However this book is not just for those who remember and resonate with the 'grunge' and Indie movements, (although without some interest in alternative music a reader could be left non-plussed)it also provides a distinctive introduction to feminism. The strength of the voices assembled here are as inspiring as their success.
The text is provocative and certainly gives you something to talk about. The focus upon female expression, whether it be song writing or performing highlights the constraints that affect women in a modern socio-political context and examines how creativity and artistry can be an attempt at rewriting and liberation. Secondly, as the title professes these women rockers proved through their hard work and talent that they could dominate a traditionally male industry and their biographies make great reading. The industry insights that the book collates are increasingly topical when we look at how much the landscape of popular music has changed since 1995. This is an exciting book about female dedication and determination but it doesn't put the music in the background, above all it is brimming with enthusiasm at the power of a great riff.
