Product Description

Synopsis
From its source in sleepy Gloustershire, the Thames runs nearly 180 miles - past the spires of Oxford, Royal Windsor and eventually on to the bustle of London. Thanks to its renovated towpath, the Thames has become the only major British river that can be walked from its source to its estuary. The pubs (all within a few hundred yards of the river) cover a wide range of establishments from Cotswold stone country inns and thatched riverside taverns to traditional East End pubs. The journey is split into 11 chapters with a specially commissioned map at the beginning of each section. The book deals with 100 pubs in detail and features many otherd in passing. A visual companion contains 150 specially-commissioned photographs - both interior and exterior. The book, in addition to providing a lively social history of the river and its inns, is a practical guide for the day-tripper and tourist alike offering tips and details on all the pubs featured (travel, opening hours, food and beer and other facilities).

3.0 out of 5 stars Great resource if you're walking the river, but the reviews are not objective, 29 Dec 2006

If you are walking the Thames, this book is fanatstic. Invaluable in fact. I used the book when I walked it, and it constantly whet my appetite for what lay ahead.

The reviews, however, are not objective - every single review is positive, though some of the pubs are plain awful. Also, it's worth noting that there isn't absolute consistency in the coverage. Some pubs that are close by are not included, even though they aren't all bad, and other pubs that are in the book are actually quite far away from the river.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide for all those river-side pub visitors, 10 Nov 2000
The riverside pub is one of those characteristic British institutions. The warm weather, the river flowing by, the beer flowing freely, what more could you ask. Mark Turner has chosen some excellent examples of the River Thames Pub which allow you to savour an important part of the life on and around the river.
