Cool Hand Luke - The Mystery of Us All, 11 Oct 2003
It is a great tragedy that the work of Donn Pearce is few and far between; however, we must be grateful for what has been made available. The book, although based on the real life experiences of our author, is narrated by a particularly anonymous voice. We are taken through the footsteps of a tremendously heart wrenching tale that evokes both truth and the journey of real men searching for their souls, and also a tender take of humour and affection. This novel brings to the sruface the reality of our prejudice. It points out our faults as a race and leads the reader to question the integrity of the world. The characters are immensely believeable and although their lifestyles are structured in a strict and rigid routine that is harsh and often cruel, it is not dis-similar to the manner in which we lead our own lives. The prison signifies not only the physical distances these men are; being away from their families and the rest of civilisation, but it also signifies the prison of the mind. Luke is an addictive character, he is the mystery in us all and the person we know in our own social circles. He is charismatic, strong and determined. And the rest of his followers are the characteristics of ourselves we are not affraid to show. Pearce has a writing style of his own that warms the readers heart and as the book closes we are left to wonder, not only what happens to the characters he introduces us to, but also, what happened to our world? Who can we trust that will not destroy us?
