Product Description

Synopsis

This work looks at the football referee from every discipline and angle: the history of their genesis as gentlemen arbiters in the Victorian era and their adjustment to the increasing sophistication of the laws; statistical analysis; social profile; cultural comparisons from refereeing around the world and in different sports; the outlook from the bottom (Sunday pub leagues) to the top (FIFA); refereeing philosophies (what is the referee's job?); and personal testimonies. Other influences on the games' decisions - linesmen, corruption, the crowd, TV and technology - are also included, together with many anecdotes, such as worst ever blunders.

5.0 out of 5 stars the soccer referees' story, 14 May 2004
This is a very interesting book about the soccer referees' story. It contains very rare informations about the evolution of soccer and the creation and development of refereing. Thanks to the good descriptions and explanations the reader can imagine how difficult this practise was and how it changed over the time. Accurate pictures allow the reader to escape in the football world during the 19th century.

4.0 out of 5 stars A must have book for anyone who's ever refereed!, 18 Aug 2007

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
As an occasional ref myself, I found this an absolutely riveting read. Thomson gives us a fairly comprehensive account of the man in black - from the early history of the role through to modern (well a few years ago) anecdotes. He also explores the dark side of violence and threats against the poor ref, in the eponymous chapter.

I just hope some young footballers will read this and then have maybe a tiny bit more sympathy and understanding for the poor guy in the middle!

Would have liked a few more photos and illustrations, but nomatter, this is a very worthwhile read.
