4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book to aid your YOGA practice, 13 Jan 2000
This is a fantastic detailed guide to Power Yoga (or Ashtanga Vinyasa as its commonly know outside the USA). It is really well written with each posture clearly explained. Beryl's writing is very inspirational. When I find it hard to just get on with my Practice, I often curl up and read and reread her book. A great tool to help you alongside a regular class, its also clear enough to teach a beginner who doesnt have access to a class. Power Yoga has changed my life - mentally, emotionally and physically and strangely has greatly improved my cardio fitness too. How can yoga help you sprint effortlessly for a bus? Beats me, you have to try it for yourself. I highly recommend this guide. I knocked off one star only because I think it would be useful to have all the postures detailed (even in sketch) in a summary type way - for those moments when you're hot and sweaty and need to know at a glance what comes next. Otherwise it would be 5 stars plus. Good luck with your Practice - your body mind and soul will love you long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ideal for yoga beginners to practice at home., 11 Jun 2002
I've had this book since 1995 and have practised on and off since then. Beryl's book is inspiring to read, she really encourages the reader to practice, and to practice it correctly, to avoid injury. She doesn't patronise the reader and keeps yoga to a level which is easier for westerners to grasp. The pictures are very good and she'll guide you through the positions, always mentioning how a beginner should approach it. I can now achieve positions with my body which I never thought possible, and physical and mental improvements are noticeable within 3 months of regular practice. Best of all, yoga can be done at home, without having to fork out for expensive gym fees! I'd recommend this book to anyone who is disciplined or wants to be! She also offers advice on how to eat more healthily and meditate. When practiced correctly, sweat will be pouring from your body and you will feel pretty tired by the end of the practice. Power Yoga is NOT for the faint hearted!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for a first time yoga student. I want more!, 6 Mar 2001
By A Customer
Never having attempted yoga before, I joined a local class, and after lesson two, came across "Power Yoga" by Beryl Bender Birch. It immediately helped to increase my understanding of all the verbal instruction in my class and also gave me more of an insight into what I could gain from this type of Yoga. I feel that I could really become "hooked" to this form of Yoga. The book is well documented and the photography is excellent with easy to follow instructions. I shall certainly use this book to assist me with my lessons and hope one day to be able to master all of its contents.
