Product Description

Synopsis

The Teutonic Knights were powerful and ferocious advocates of holy war. Their history is suffused with crusading, campaigning and struggle. Feared by their enemies but respected by medieval Christendom, the knights and their Order maintained a firm hold over the Baltic and northern Germany and established a formidable regime which flourished across Central Europe for 300 years. This major new book surveys the gripping history of the knights and their Order and relates their rise to power; their struggles against Prussian pagans; the series of wars against Poland and Lithuania; the clash with Alexander Nevsky's Russia; and the gradual stagnation of the order in the fourteenth century. The book is replete with dramatic episodes - such as the battle on frozen Lake Peipus in 1242, or the disaster of Tannenberg - but focuses primarily on the year-after-year struggle to maintain power, fend of incursions and raiding bands and to launch crusades against unbelieving foes. And it was the crusade - with knights demonstrating their valour, daring and knightly worth - which chiefly characterised and breathed life into this militant, conquering Holy Order.

William Urban's narrative charts the rise and fall of the Order and, in an accessible and engaging style, throws light on a band of knights whose deeds and motives have long been misunderstood.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very informative but a little disjointed, 21 Jul 2003

The Teutonic knights have played a minor part in many of the books I have read on the crusades and this book does an excellent job of portraying an interesting and multifaceted organisation.

This book is filled with the exploits and deeds of the Order. It shows the order from the orders that influenced it such as the Knights of the Temple and the Knights of Malta, the orders hey-day and its eventual fall.

I found the first two thirds of the book engrossing but the last third became a little disjointed (although this may have been caused by the fracture of the order creating a larger focus for the later history of the order).

4.0 out of 5 stars Positive, Helpful book., 24 Feb 2004

This history of the Teutonic Order (Actually it was called the German Order) explores a military order that has suffered much at the hands of liberals and Nazis. William Urban presents the Order in a new light without becoming an apologist. If you are happy with your prejudices and assumptions, do not read this book. Otherwise, if you have the money, buy it!
