This text reasserts the place of the arts in the primary school curriculum at reception and Key Stages 1 and 2. Acknowledging the time constraints of a crowded curriculum, the author stresses a common developmental approach to the different forms of creative and aesthetic expression. The arts are presented as the vital fourth "R", integrated modes of learning alongside reading, writing and arithmetic, where children can absorb and express ideas, feelings and attitudes. Guidance is given on the development of a personal, autonomous teaching style and on evaluating and monitoring children's progression in skill acquisition, creative production and critical response.

Anne Bloomfield, Reader in Primary Arts Education, Nottingham Trent University, with John Childs who provides practical music workshops and music performances at all levels.

This book is ideal if you are looking for a text covering dance, drama and music in the primary school. Easy to follow for non-specialist teachers.

I have just completed a four year Primary Education degree at Nottingham Trent University. It has been a tremendous pleasure and privilege to study under Dr Anne Bloomfield, not just this year but in four years at Nottingham Trent University. Her ability to empower and inspire confidence in all people through integrating the arts makes her one of the most gifted and talented teachers I have seen. The way that she respects and values all individuals’ efforts is a model of good practice and one that I will take into my career. I will be forever indebted for her ability to empower a confidence in my own ability to teach the Arts. This book allows the inexperienced and unconfident teacher to succeed. More importantly, I believe, it provides and shows direction to teachers who want to give a more 'holistic' approach to child education.
