Product Description

Product Description

How did a magnificent rescue operation become such a common way of giving birth? And how safe is it really? Why do some countries have 10 per cent of caesarian births, and some more than 50 per cent? Why have risky procedures, such as forceps deliveries, not been eliminated by the C-section? What is the birthing pool test? What are the very first microbes met by a caesarean-born baby? Is it easy to breastfeed after a caesarean? Why are different approaches taken to scheduled C-sections, C-sections during labour, and emergency C-sections? What do mother and baby miss out on by not sharing a vaginal birth? What do we know about the long-term consequences of being born by caesarean? What do we know about the long-term consequences of giving birth by caesarean? What is the future of the 'a la carte'C-section? What is the future of a civilisation born by caesarean? Having been involved in half a century of the history of the caesarean, Dr Michel Odent is uniquely and authoritatively equipped to deal with these vital and urgent questions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good all-rounder, 30 Mar 2004
By A Customer
I wanted to read this book because of all the media coverage.... some of its content is quite controversial - I am reserving judgement but what i didn't expect was a book which talked about the caesarean like no other book. It certainly gave me food for thought and didn't make me feel guilty for my choices but made me understand a lot more about birth and what choices I have.
The author has always been controversial but some of his stuff is now main stream (like water births) and it wasn't when it came out so I am quite keen to see how his views on caesareans will shape our society. Certainly it was very informative!

4.0 out of 5 stars essential reading, 1 Jan 2009
An important read for women having babies and birth professionals. This book stresses the life saving wonder of the ceasarean section but also explores the possible implications of overuse of this procedure when birth could be allowed to progress naturally. This is a book that is sure to have elicit a strong response from those who read it, whether they be a woman who has chosen elective C-secition or one who wishes to avoid it at all costs. A worth while read.
