Product Description

Product Description
This work aims to help all those involved with autistic children to recover, little by little, from the trauma and despair engendered by the diagnosis autistic, autistic spectrum disorder, autistic features, autistic tendencies or Aspergers syndrome. It is a collection of useful ideas, activities, strategies and games developed by the author from her many years of experience of working with young children with autistic features. Included are descriptions of the many cognitive/behaviourial methods currently available, findings from infant-research and modern psychodynamic understanding, which are based on the underlying assumption that in any human being, including the most severely autistic child, there will be by definition by some healthy developmental i.e. non autistic, potential towards human contact and communication.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gem of a book for parents of a young autistic child, 25 Aug 2000
By A Customer
REVIEW: This is a gem of a book. The title hardly suggests a lively, engrossing, enjoyable read; yet this is what I met with. Here and there I even found myself emotionally involved, as in the episodes of Leila and the Swing (chapter 2) or Jazzy and the Rubbish Bin (chapter 3), in each of which, after a long and weary spell of seeming to get nowhere, a new approach is tried and a sudden, hardly expected bit of progress is achieved. "My heart leapt with joy" writes Ms Janert, in describing the latter little triumph. I felt much the same in reading about it. The Swing anecdote by the way dates from 1993. (See reference to Klauber.) That, and the fact that further funding has just been refused for the work Ms Janert and co-workers are currently engaged in, may give some idea of the sweat, toil and frustration which must surely underly the lively writing. Wide reading, creative imagination, a flexible approach and keen sympathy with children all supplement work of the "hands-and-knees" variety as background to what will soon, I suspect, become a standard handbook for both parents and professionals concerned with problems in this area. If you are such a person get the book, read it and profit by it. You are unlikely to regret doing so. Bill Austin
