"Hymns for Prayer and Praise" is the best attempt in thirty years to collect Office Hymns for the Daily/Divine Office in the West. It is not a comprehensive translation of all the post-Vatican II hymns, nor is it an update of the Sarum hymns from the English Hymnal. It combines the two, providing good but often shortened versions of traditionally appointed hymns plus well-tested modern and medieval-Victorian hymns. An interesting feature is the provision of simple plainsong melodies for every hymn, plus a metrical tune. The benefit is that finally a panel of church musicians has realised that ordinary churches these days can't (or don't want to) sing complicated 9th Century plainsong! It's a little home-grown as a scholarly work, and purists will not really warm to it. Academically it's a pity it makes the claim to be comprehensive when it's not, and the Introduction is a little outrageous (!) but as a manual of everything you need to sing the office hymns, it's just right. Any small liturgical group of accompanied or unaccompanied singers will find this invaluable.
