Product Description

Product Description

Frank Sheardown defines a lurcher as 'a crossbred between any longdog and a breed other than a longdog'. This book is, therefore, about dogs that result from the matings of a longdog and other breeds such as gundgos, guard dogs or sheepdogs. In addtion to looking at the lurcher as it is bred today and what can be found of the breed around the world, the author looks at the practical aspects of breeding, care and dog management.

2.0 out of 5 stars o.k. not great though., 24 Jan 2006
Not a bad read, not a great one either. Pretty old fashioned, no mention of any pitbul crosses (and to those people who say you cant get them now...........yeah, right.) Quite a short read with a few strange quotes of heights and weights of certain breeds that are well off the mark. i.e. if anyone owned a Doberman Pinscher that weighed on average 44lbs, they would get locked up for malnutrition of the poor animal. It should be between 66lb and 94lb on average and a bare minimum of 25in at the shoulder just for bitches. Most of the information about the Doberman and their founder was very innacurate, I've had two up to now and like to think I know a bit about the breed. Some of his information on the other breeds was quite wrong too. Mr Sheardown only had to pick up a book to see his facts were wrong, so this put me off a little on how much he in fact knew about Lurchers. Maybe he would counter argue that these are too much like the kennel club guidelines. As for me, I'm happy with my three lurchers but was expecting to learn a few things during the couple of hours it took me to read the book. And I did. One, he doesn't really know too much about his chosen subject. And two, I paid what I consider a lot of money for very little book.

5.0 out of 5 stars An exseptional book for the working dog owner, 30 Nov 2000
By A Customer
In this book Frank sheardown clearly looks into the use of lurchers in the past and present. Not only does it have diffrent chapters for both diffrent class of dog but diffrent types of game as well. This is a fantastic book that clearly shows why the abolisment of hunting would lead to the over-running of the countryside.
