The international political scene has, for many decades, precluded attempts to create a serious historical evaluation of Russian aircraft and their manufacturers. In recent years the situation has become far more relaxed, and access to records has been opened to Western researchers - a development from which this book greatly benefits. In 1909 Andrei Nikolaevich Tupolev embarked upon the study of aerodynamics at the Moscow Imperial Technical High School, and from that time his skill as a designer was apparent to the world. His life was fraught by political intrigue and, like many of his compatriots, he found himself in and out of prison for many years. The book is a study of Tupolev's aircraft designs, and of his perception and management skills, which forged together many of Russia's leading pioneers in aviation. His first aeroplane, the ANT-1, had its maiden flight in 1923, and this record traces every design that bears his name.
