1.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing, 6 Jun 2007
By J. Mowbray (Farnham) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have used and enjoyed several pub walks books, and walking guides in general, but this one has been a disappointment on the 3 walks that I've followed from it. I won't be using this book again.

The directions are sloppy with few indications of distances to be covered such that it is far too difficult to stay on the correct path. For example, "...walk down to a fork. Keep left...", should have read "follow the path down and bear right at the first fork and then bear left at the second fork". The suggestion that the reader should "Turn sharp left about 60 yards before a fingerpost..." is less than helpful when the fingerpost is not visible from the point where one is supposed to turn.

The maps appear to be accurate, but do not include sufficient detail to allow the reader to be confident of the correct path when the text is ambiguous. For example, they do not show where other footpaths meet or cross the route being followed. I was far too often left frustrated and unsure whether I was on the correct path with neither the text nor maps giving definitive guidance.

There are so many good pubs (and wonderful walks to be had from them) in Hampshire and the New Forest in particular, that the author's choice leaves me wondering why they were selected. Some of the pubs featured are disappointing and the walks uninspiring (the last one I tried taking us past the local dump).

My advice to anyone considering purchasing this book is that you would be better off picking a pub from the Good Pub Guide and working out your own route with a good detailed map. I accept that working out your own route from a map may be a little daunting, but it's easier than following the directions in this book.

Incidentally, I found the sister book "Adventurous pub walks in the Peak District" by Charles Wildgoose in this same series to be an excellent guide to that region.

4.0 out of 5 stars Something different, 26 Feb 2008
By A. W. Brown "Long Tall Tony" (Portsmouth, Hampshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I've used this book for 3 different walks - 1 round the back of Portsdown Hill, at Bishops Waltham and along the Meon Valley.

I found the walks entertaining and easy enough to follow, with the appropriate OS maps. They showed me parts of Hampshire I hadn't seen, even right on my doorstep!

I can't comment on the choice of pubs, they've all looked ok to me, but I haven't sampled their hospitality.
