This is an invaluable archive of people's memoirs of life in Leicestershire and Rutland from the late 1800's to the early 1960's.

This book is full of village and town accounts describing once common social events that used to take place throughout the annual calendar, along with rituals and domestic routines that have now long since disappeared; all from the perspective of young women and girls of the time. Subjects cover the 1st and 2nd World Wars, Farming, Domestic life, The working place and Local Entertainment, to name but a few.

Containing a useful village name index and some black an white photographs, this book will prove interesting for anyone wishing to gain a knowledge of life in Leicestershire and Rutland, as it was back then. My one criticism would be that lack of a 'glossary' that would have been an aid fir the younger reader, on certain names and terms mentioned, otherwise, this book is a most enjoyable read, and one very useful resource for students on social history in modern times.
