Product Description

Product Description

Wendy Lawson has an autism spectrum disorder. Considered to be intellectually disabled and "almost incapable of doing as she is told" at school, she was later misdiagnosed as schizophrenic - a label that stuck with her for more than 25 years. Her sense of self was then non-existent, but Wendy is now a mother of four with two university degrees; she is a social worker and adult educator, and operates her own business. She is also a poet and writer, sharing her understanding of autism with others to help "build a bridge ...from my world to theirs". This book is part of that bridge.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exellent, real insight to life for a person with Aspergers., 8 Mar 2001
By A Customer
This is an exellent book, giving people an insight to what life can be like for those with Asperger's syndrome (Autism).

I am writing my university dissertation on the stereo-typical view that society has on those with autism, and found this book gave me a greater understanding of those I have been researching. Wendy Lawson writes about her feelings and experiences, giving the reader a fantastic journey into the world how she sees it.

The writing is simplistic and is an easy, enjoyable read, once you have picked up this book, you will not want to put it down, laughing and crying with Wendy till the finish.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but also disappointing., 4 Dec 2000
By J. Hamilton (Glasgow, Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I was very interested in this book, as I thought it would be fascinating to find out how an autistic woman had managed to bring up four children and to sustain a marriage for twenty years...but I was very disappointed to find that she talked entirely about herself and how she felt (which was interesting, nevertheless) managing to get through the whole book without giving us information about her children and how she brought them up, or what sort of relationship they have, how they turned out, how they feel about their Mum's difficulties.

Similarly, she makes hardly any mention at all of her husband, and virtually nil of their relationship. We are given the odd cryptic clue, but no real examples as to how they got on.

Still, aside from that, it was an interesting read, giving another personal insight into autism.
