5.0 out of 5 stars Self harm or self care - the thin line, 23 Mar 2004
By CAROLINE (London United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
'To recognise that self- harm is an expression of emotional express is to open oneself up to the possiblity of compassion.' This book offers compassion.
It shows the thin line between flawed self-care that many of us, our friends and family experience at some time in our lives, and self-harm. The fact that often self-harm is only recognised when it is violent and attracts attention means that care and support are not offered at the early stages when they're needed. After exploring what we mean by self-harm and self-care, Maggie Turp continues with five accounts of her therapeutic work with clients. The case studies range from eating disorders, excessive working and 'self-harm by omission' - an individual who failed to seek necessary medical care. The final chapter offers a critique of the way that social institutions deal with self-harming and makes recommendations for a more caring and holistic approach.
As a lay reader with no professional connection with the psychiatric, medical or social services, I found this book moving and beautifully written and shortly after reading it was recommending it to friends. The writer's honesty about the difficulties she encounters with some of her clients, who have experienced excruciating suffering in their lives, makes the work accessible and emotionally engaging. She gives examples of where her own self-doubt helped her gain insight into a client's behaviour and so put her in a position to help them. Hopefully the book will also increase our awareness so that we are more able to recognise and respond to self-harming before it becomes visible.

4.0 out of 5 stars A unique perspective of self-harm, 1 May 2008
By Mrs. M. L. Hillery "marymoose99" (Cumbria, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book offers a unique and otherwise unexplored view of self-harm. By using case-studies from her own experience as a counsellor, Turp uses the term self-harm as a very broad concept including lack of self-care as being a form of self-harm, in addition to the more visible forms of self-injury!

Turp is particularly interested in the skin, the symbolic nature of self-harm, and ways to self-sooth. She certainly offers a different perspective, and her book is likely to be of particular use to therapists. Many of her points raised are important - self-harm is not necessarily highly visible. However, she does focus on self-harm in its broadest sense, rather than on self-injury as such.
