Product Description

Product Description

This text is a useful introduction to ABA for parents and professionals working with children with autism. Successful child rearing is an essential skill for any parent. For most of us this skill is handed down from our own parents and society in general, where we bring up our children using skills based largely upon common sense and a willingness to do our best. However, when it comes to more difficult aspects of developing skills in our children, we need something more dependable than good will. Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA), the systematic implementation of scientifically proven behavioural principles offers just that. Aimed at enhancing people's lives in ways that they or their carers feel are important, it includes a variety of methods and techniques which can be used to promote, decrease or maintain skills for daily living.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very positive read, 21 Aug 2003
By A Customer
The Peat group in Ireland reveal here an ongoing success story. By educating parents as ABA therapists for their own 'special' children they provide invaluable support to a minority group often overlooked.
ABA principles which have evolved greatly over the past 30 years, are introduced and discussed. Reasons are given for its choice as a therapy and myths are dispelled. Stress is made on the importance of continual data collection, and examples are given to illustrate specific ABA programmes which have been used by the group.
A large part of the book concentrates on 3 year old Colin's first year of treatment which involves his whole family. However
Laura, his mum is the main therapist and she meticulously details all the trials of the 17 targets, and Colin's progress is shared and evaluated with the reader. Great insight is given into how a parent can help design and carry out an ABA programme to suit the specific needs of their child.
This is a very readable book with jargon explained in layman's terms, and is a must for anybody considering ABA as a therapy.
