4.0 out of 5 stars Screenplay is satisfying for a movie that is missing scenes, 19 Jan 1999
By A Customer
After reading this screenplay book on the Avengers movie, I think that the movie would have made more sense had these cut scenes not been taken away. The movies flow and reasons are more clear when the segments that are missing are there. Bad Emma blowing up the Prospero project. This clearly does not make sense how its shown in the film that was released. The Ministry points the finger at the real Emma and shows her the security clip that has Bad Emma doing the sabotage. After the sabotage, the footage would have shown Sir August playing on one of those huge organ piano's, obviously meaning he was behind the sabotage in some way, then it cuts to the opening credit. Another missing scene shows that after Emma escapes Sir August's mansion, that Bad Emma would have shown affection to Sir August, but he tells "it" off, says he could've made thousands of "it" and that "it" must get back the real Emma. A somewhat strange moment that is I think. A final scene that is in this, towards the climax, is when the two agents approach the old Ministry building (or was it a factory?), is when after they see the dead teddies they split up for the moment. Sir August encounters Emma on the snowy grounds and talks for a moment. He says his feelings to her somewhat, she is unfazed and then he's gone. Later Steed and Emma are looking through the old building and go through an old parking lot like space. There is my review. After reading this, I thought that the movie would have been better based on this book. I had to imagine these scenes as I remember some of them ran through the movie preview trailers in the theaters. I never realised how a fast read a screenplay book would be. Another plus to this were the photos in it. Theres only 8 pages of them, but a fair amount were new to me and quite pleasing to have in the book. Some of the pics actually help explain the missing scenes. Plus there is an interview from the writer of the film Don Macpherson and it was very insightful reading about the process of him concieving the script to producer Jerry Weintraub and Warner Bros. studio. Throughout that part of the book are some production sketches as well. A good read with pictures, that was too fast a read for my liking (I wish there was more!). I only wished the movie looked like the screenplay.
