3.0 out of 5 stars Not a bad read, 27 Oct 2000
By A Customer
When I heard the avengers was going to be a film I nearly died, one of my favourite series - a film? Unfortunately it wasn't as good as expected but that doesn't stop the book from being a decent read. This isn't going to go down as one of the classic reads, nor will it be essential reading for examinations but it is a good adaptation of the film. In many ways it exceeds where the film failed. Without the actors and sets it is upto the reader to provide the images the text lovingly creates. Scenes that seemed incomplete in the film, probably due to hasty re-editing, remain whole and complete. Details that were previously missing come to the foreground and lovingly recreate a time that has passed by. It was silly to imagine that the 60's could be continued to the 90's as the film tried. The book, although with the same premise doesn't have this problem. The inclusion of extra scenes, in particular the cloning of Emma Peel also creates a more rounded story. It is a shame that some of the ideas in the book were not carried over to the screen, this is presumably based on the screenplay. In criticism however the romantic link between John Steed and Emma Peel is tenuious at best and the virtual rape by August De Winter leaves a sour taste in the reader's palete. For people who have seen the film I would recommend you to read this novelisation. See what was missing, if you didn't like the film it may persuade you to revisit it and take another look. However, compared with other novelisations, this does leave you feeling slightly disappointed, a problem more to do with the subject matter than with the author.

Written in the not so serious style of the Avengers world. As long as you don't analyze the science behind the story, it makes for a good read, especially if you grew up watching... Read more
