5.0 out of 5 stars A very interesting insight into Douglas Adams & Hitchhikers, 23 Jul 2001
By A Customer
I am a big fan of the Douglas Adams work. I purchased this book prior to his untimely death, but didn't get round to reading it until a couple of months after.

This book is undoubtedly for fans of Douglas Adams and the Hitchhikers 'trilogy', as well as the Dirk Gently duo. If you haven't read any of the above, or listened to the radio series (also available on tape/CD), I'd struggle to recommend this title - the information would have no context.

If you are like me, and a big fan of Douglas Adams I highly recommend it. I felt I got a great deal of insight into Douglas Adams and his work. Why the radio series worked and why the TV series didn't quite work. Why the last two books are quite different to the first three. Who was involved with HHGG and when.

In addition to some incredibly useful and often interesting background, it contains some of the 'out-takes' from the books etc.

I consider it a must have for Douglas Adams fans. Unfortunately it isn't up to date, being updated shortly after the publication of Mostly Harmless in the early 1990s. Given Douglas Adams didn't publish any books after that however, it isn't too much of a problem.

I'd love Neil Gaiman to complete the biography up to the present day however.

A good easy read, full of interesting information and laughs.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is a biography, despite what other reviewers say., 14 May 2001

This is not another Hitchhiker's story, nor a typical Neil Gaiman book. If you want to understand the man behind the idea of the Hitch-Hiker's Guide, this is a good start: it does detail his frustrations, the problems encountered during the making of the radio series, the books, the TV show, et cetera. It's not always pleasant: there were obviously some real difficulties. And it won't explain much about Douglas Adams outside of the Hitch-Hiker's context. But it's well worth reading, particularly if you're a fan of HHGTTG rather than Douglas Adams in general...

3.0 out of 5 stars You'd be paranoid too if everyone was out to get you..., 17 Jul 2000
Have I missed something? These reviews relate to 'The HitchHikers Guide to the Galaxy' by Douglas Adams.

This book 'Don't Panic' appears (from the synopsis)to be a biography of Douglas Adams.

If you like humour get the Original 'Hitchhikers GTTG' by Douglas Adams AND Neil Gaiman's other book 'Good Omens' (co-written by Terry Patchett). Then go on holidays...

"The Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy" has got to be the weirdest book of all time, this one and the other four in the "trilogy". Read more
