Product Description

Review

'The GR5 is one of the great long-distance walks in western Europe. This Cicerone guide deals with the section down the Vosges and Jura, a total of 672km, and gives a good overview of an interesting area not much visited by walkers from these islands.' Irish Mountain Log magazine / Autumn 2006

Product Description

This is a practical guidebook to the trekking possibilities in the Vosges and French Jura mountains. These mountains, which also contain three regional parks and contrasting landscapes and wildlife habitats, are of a relatively moderate height, and have a well-developed network of waymarked paths that provide a wealth of opportunities for the walker. The book will be useful to anyone who plans to explore this lesser-known corner of France on foot, whether by means of short excursions or longer trails. The main part of the guide describes a continuous long-distance route (672km, 418 miles), which traverses the Vosges and Jura ranges from the German border in the north to Lake Geneva in the south, much of it along the GR5 footpath. Walking the entire route is a significant undertaking, amply rewarded by the diversity of landscapes and villages encountered along the way.

3.0 out of 5 stars More Trek than other Walks, 21 Sep 2009
By Mr. Paul J. Walsh "Hillwalker" (Dublin, Ireland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this primarily to find out if there were centres from which we could do a few walks while in Alsace. We prefer to stay in one room for a week or more. The book is mostly about the long multi-day trek on the GR5, and the details of other shorter walks are a bit sparse. However we did use the book to identify a suitable centre (Ribeauville), and did a couple of the walks: the villages (Riquewihr and Hunawihr), and the three chateaux (plus some walks on the Route des Cretes). The book did not really have enough detail for the day walks, but some supplementary information and maps from the local tourist office were enough to get us sorted. The book is pretty much as described, any parts I used were accurate (with much more comprehensive detail for the long trek), and well worth buying if you want to plan some walks in Alsace.
