Product Description

Product Description

This is a walker's guide to the 740km Pilgrim Road from Le Puy-en-Velay in central France to the Pyrenees. It is the only original guide to this route in English. A companion volume by the same author, "The Way of St James" (Pyrenees-Santiago-Finisterre), continues the route through Spain from the Pyrenees to Santiago de Compostella (or Finisterre). As well as giving directions for walking the route the book also provides information on places to visit along the way, the history of the pilgrimage and the availability of practical facilities such as shops, bars, restaurants and accommodation. This guide contains an outline of the route along the Cele valley (53km) as one appendix and, unlike existing guides (in any language), a comprehensive listing of St. James and other pilgrim references along the way as another. There is a list of suggestions for further reading and a glossary of geographical and other useful terms. It also contains a series of sketch maps covering the entire route to aid the user in planning his or her journey.

About the Author

Alison Raju is a former teacher of French, German and Spanish to adults and the author of four pilgrim guides for walkers published by Cicerone Press: Way of St. James: Le Puy to the Pyrenees, (2nd edition 2003) Way of St. James: Pyrenees-Santiago-Finisterre (3rd edition 2003), Via de la Plata: Seville/Granada-Santiago (2nd edition 2005) and the Pilgrim Road to Nidaros (Oslo-Trondheim, 2001.) A walker's guide to the Via Francigena, the classic pilgrim road from Canterbury to Rome, is in preparation. A chance viewing of a television programme in the early 1970's lead to Alison's interest in the Pilgrim Road to Santiago, at that time barely known in Britain. A walker most of her life she had the opportunity to walk the 1000 mile camino from Le Puy-en-Velay to Santiago all in one go in 1990, a time which coincided, fortuitously, with Cicerone Press seeking an author to write an original guide in English to the Spanish section of the route. Since then Alison has walked and explored many of the pilgrim roads through Europe (France, Germany, Switzerland, Portugal) as well as those she has written about.

1.0 out of 5 stars This guide is not worth carrying, 7 Oct 2006
I bought this guide and the companion to walk from Arthez de Bearne to Finisterre. I regret not throwing them away earlier than I did. They added very little value and add extra weight which could be used to carry a useful guide. Everyone I met on the camino who had this guide had the same opinion and wished they had one of the other guides available. I saw this book discarded in Hostals several times.

1 - The books provide for the most part directions to following the camino Frances. The camino is so well signed that a narrative is completely unecessary.
2 - They are very out of date. The date stated is 2003. The material is clearly much older. The descriptions are clearly out of step with what you find. Towns that have Pilgrims Alburgues in them don't even get a mention.
3 - There is little or no attempt to provide information on the Pilgrims Alburgues. A significant part of the experience. The French and German guides were full of really useful info e.g. how good / clean, facilities internet, meals, cost.
4 - The material is very inconsistent and contains significant errors. It is clear that no-one checked the guide out while in draft form otherwise some obvious mistakes in Raju's notes would have been discovered.
5 - The sketch maps are of little or no use and are very rough. Proper maps would be of real use and of more interest and would help on the odd occaision you do get lost, the descriptions don't help.

The best guides have proper maps, descriptions of towns, Pilgrim Hostals info, Points of interest etc.

Most of the info in the Spanish French or German guides is pretty easy to read if you have a smattering of the language. The best guides I saw were the spanish El Pais and the german Rotherwandfurherm the french miam mian midot was well thought of. You could survive with the little confraternity book easily enough. There is a nother english book by John Brierly that didn't seem too bad.

Buen Camino
