Product Description

Product Description

The seven Canary Islands seem to bask in everlasting sunshine and have been called The Fortunate Islands. Away from the bustling resorts, walkers can discover exceptionally rugged volcanic mountains, dense forests, scrubby semi-deserts and splendid cliff coastlines. Most of the landscapes around the islands are protected as national parks, rural parks, nature reserves and sites of special scientific interest. Walkers with an interest in flowers will find a bewildering array of endemic species. This guidebook takes in the islands of Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. A companion guide ("Canary Islands 1: West") covers Tenerife, La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro. Together they reveal 100 walking routes covering over 1000 miles (1600km) in total. The routes take in a wide variety of landscapes from the coast to the highest mountains. Most of the walks can be accessed using local bus services, and as bars are abundant, cold drinks can be enjoyed along the way.

About the Author

Paddy Dillon is a prolific outdoor writer with over thirty guidebooks to his name, as well as more than a dozen booklets and brochures. He writes for outdoor magazines and other publications, as well as for tourism organisations. Paddy lives near the Lake District and has walked in every county in England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales; writing about walks in every one of them. Paddy enjoys simple day walks, challenging long-distance walks, and is a dedicated island-hopper. He has led guided walks and walked extensively in Europe, as well as in Nepal, Tibet, Africa and the Rocky Mountains of Canada and the USA. While researching routes, Paddy works directly onto a palmtop computer, so that his descriptions are precise, having been written at the very point at which the reader uses them. Paddy takes his own photographs, has appeared on radio and TV, and is a member of the Outdoor Writers' Guild.

1.0 out of 5 stars could do so much better, 16 Jan 2006
What a disappointment are the Canary Island books by Paddy Dillon. I have used several Cicerone books in the past but these are well below the normal standard. Each book tries to cover three, or four, islands so wherever you are most of the book is useless. Many routes seem to have little point, the classic of this is a triangular road walk on Lanzarote involving walking along busy tourist roads not just point less but potentially dangerous.
Introductions are Ok but after that you are almost on your own, the maps are awful and of no use whatsoever. I could not find one aid to navigation in either book, there are no compass directions or walk tiimngs for any point on any walk.
Sadly these are way below the standard that I expect from Cicerone press and I am consigning mine to ebay.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful and informative, 2 Dec 2004

This guide is thicker than the Sunflower guides and has more walks in it (50 in all). It is also a more conventional paperback shape (less easy to fit into a pocket). I would have liked to see more circular walks in the book. Public transport is not very good, so it can be difficult to get to a starting point or return from the end point (though many people do hitch-hike). The maps are not at all detailed, so you might want a separate map as well. On the other hand, the guide texts are very detailed, and if you had a good map you might not need the guide.

I don't suppose many people would choose the Eastern Canaries for a walking holiday -- they are mostly volcanic desert -- but there are some interesting parts. To be honest, I only got the book in case the weather was not good enough for the beach. As it turned out, the weather was fantastic when we were there (November) and we did more swimming than walking, so I can't really comment on the accuracy of the walking guide. But on the short walks that we did, the guide seemed accurate. The introductory chapters are also interesting, covering geology, trees and plants, birds and animals, etc.. The photos give a good idea of what to expect

3.0 out of 5 stars Factual, but dry, 14 Aug 2008
By Dr. Nicholas P. G. Davies (Halifax, UK) - See all my reviews

This guidebook is useful, but has its limitations. It needs reading with a map open beside you. The sketch maps aren't great. As it is covering a large area there are inevitable selection biases.

The routes are accurately described. What I don't get from this book is the feel of the place, or the flavour of the walks.

There is a load of good walking on the Canary Islands, and with the heat you'll find the walks as much of a challenge as any English or Scottish peak. There's a different set of problems walking in hot dry territories and it's fun to be more worried about sun and water rather than wind and rain.

This guidebook will help walkers discover the walking on these islands...but the guidebook could have been more fun, and given more flavour of the walks. These books feel a bit too much "turn left at the gate."
