Product Description

Product Description

Situated towards the eastern end of the Alps' great curve from the Mediterranean coast through central Europe to the Balkans, the Dolomites region occupies an area of northern Italy as large as Wales. Although the Dolomites' reputation as a playground for 'hard men' is fully justified, these mountains are by no means the domain of the rock climber alone. A dense network of footpaths offers endless scope for exhilarating high-level walks; the renowned 'vie ferrate' (rock routes aided by fixed metal ladders and cables) lead up into many sensational situations; while in winter the region becomes a premier skiing destination for thousands of Europeans. The authors hope that these treks through the Dolomites will yield rewarding experiences and enduring memories for readers able to visit this most extraordinary region.

About the Author

Martin Collins is a freelance author, photo-journalist and cartographer, as well as a regular contributor to the UK outdoor media. First walking the GR5 in 1981 kindled a passion for the French Alps that remains as strong as ever. He has since written over twenty books for walkers embracing the coast, mountains and countryside of the UK and parts of Europe. He has three children, and lives in north Wales on the edge of the Snowdonia National Park. Gillian Price has trekked throughout Asia and the Himalayas, but now lives in Venice and is exploring the mountain ranges of Italy to write a series of outstanding Cicerone guides. Starting in the Italian Dolomites, Gillian has written guides to walking all over Italy as well as Corsica, and is an active member of the Italian Alpine Club and the Outdoor Writers' Guild. She also enjoys leading walking tours.

4.0 out of 5 stars An essential book for walking the Alta Via 1, 25 Sep 2006
By Robert Collier (East Sussex) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I walked the Alta Via 1 this summer in late August/early September. Martin Collins' book is an essential item if you intend to do this fantastic high-altitude trek. The profiles are fairly accurate, and the routes are very well described. The only criticism I had with the book is that some of the timings are ambitious to say the least (I am a very fit, a rower at university) and I have severe problems at keeping up with some of the timings, yet some of the timings I could easily beat. Apart from that, the advice is completely sound (except the bus to Lago di Braines does not leave from Villabassa train station). The suggestion about doing the walk in early September is a must, one of the mornings it was snowing a little, yet most days were about 30C. A great trek, an excellent book, just take the timings with a pinch of salt.
