Product Description

Product Description

Ben Nevis, the peaks of Glen Coe and the surrounding mountains give some of the best snow and ice climbing anywhere in Europe, when the conditions are right. So popular and well known is Ben Nevis, that in recent years, climbers from as far afield as Poland, Australia, France, Italy and the USA have been seen trudging the delights of the 'famous' Allt a'Mhuilinn approach. Hamish MacInnes and Yvon Chouinard have made films of winter climbing on Ben Nevis, as have French guides, who continue to bring clients back each year. Justifiably a good 'tick' on any discerning world traveller's itinerary. Many of the routes are longer than experienced anywhere else in British hills and of alpine-like seriousness. It is not a good idea to be lured onto the famous 'Tower Ridge' of Ben Nevis as your first Scottish winter climb! This new full-colour edition has over 700 routes, including the best of the new routes up to the 2002 season. The guide covers Ben Nevis, Carn Dearg, Aonachs Mor and Beag, and Bidean nam Bian, Buchaille Etive Mor and outlying peaks in Glencoe.

About the Author

In compiling this guidebook for winter climbers visiting Ben Nevis and Glen Coe, the author, Alan Kimber, has drawn on 32 years of mountain experience gained from living in Fort William. During this period he has worked as both instructor and mountain guide with a variety of different organisations - from private outdoor centres to national bodies for mountain training. In addition to developing an expert knowledge of the peaks in this guidebook, the author has derived a deep sense of personal satisfaction and enjoyment from travelling and climbing amongst Britain's highest and most demanding peaks in winter. Alan Kimber has also visited the Himalayas, Peru, Alaska, Baffin Island, Labrador and Africa, and worked numerous seasons in the European Alps. At present he operates his own mountain training and guiding company based in Fort William. With his wife, Sue, he also runs self-catering accommodation for visiting climbers.

4.0 out of 5 stars A concise, clear and comprehensive guide to the area, 11 Dec 2001
By A Customer
This book provides a concise guide to winter climbing in the areas. The topos are clear and the range of grades of routes makes this an ideal choice for anybody climbing in Glencoe or the Ben over winter. This guide is entirely based on winter climbs unlike the general rock and ice climb books published by others; which i find a little annoying due to the mixing of rock with ice. I purchased this guide because I was climbing more and more in the Glencoe area and the general SMC winter guide to scotland was not comprehensive enougth. This compliments this and I look forward to exploring some of the new possibilities Alan Kimber has presented us with.
