5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and essential book, 12 Jun 2001
By dermotcusack@aol.com (Blandford England) - See all my reviews
This is an esential guide to the GR11 - but the author's timings are too fast. I accept that he makes no allowances for stops but I could not maintain his pace despite just completing the London Marathon in under 4 hours. I also think that there should be stronger advice to walk after mid June when the route is free of snow and all the refuges are open.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't leave home without it!, 30 Jan 2001
By A Customer
This is a real walking guide, with detailed maps for each section of this 44-day odyssey. Like any walking guide, the real review can only be written after the reader has "walked the walk", so this reviewer has to be careful to say that, in the planning stage, this book certainly seems to have been very well researched. Each day's route is carefully laid out, with a description of the shortcomings of the signage and the alternative routes. Since the GR11 takes one away from what passes as "civilisation" for days at a stretch, the detailed information about where the route intercepts shops, campsites, huts and bothies is invaluable in planning the kit requirements. Armchair walkers might find the small format difficult to read, but on the trail the small size will come in to its own. I have searched high and low for English language material on GR11, and this really does seem to be the definitive guide. Don't leave home without it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book..., 2 Aug 2003
in all. Most useful. Coming from an office environment, the timings are initially ridiculously optimistic. However, after 14 days or so, they begin to be met and then surpassed as fitness increases. Prospective walkers' attrition rates seem to be quite high - other people successfully completing it include 100 mile runners and 2000 mile walkers!...so be warned! His route descriptions are generally excellent, but so is the way marking. Only 4 or 5 times was the book really necessary to find the way. The section on location of shops/banks etc is most useful 'though is beginning to become only a little inaccurate and needs updating (now there are extra banks and hostels.) The author becomes a personal friend by the end - learning to intrepret his warnings (sometimes over paranoid!) and descriptions. Good luck with it!
