Mark Richards' guide to walking Hadrian's Wall is up to Wainwright standards. Authoritative, interesting, knowledgeable on the history and direct on the guiding. The hand written style,and hand drawn illustrations, like Wainwrights', adds to the charm. I used this guide for a recent across Britain hike, and found it really useful. Only two slight moans: because the early part of the walk is road bound Richards gives a lovely rural alternative: up the Tyne valley. But I wished he had also detailed the direct route, as that is the one we took. We made it more pleasurable by some harmless trespassing on the Vallum: Wainwright is not above suggesting this as a reasonable alternative. Also, Richards' walk is detailed from East to West, and is fine for that. But if the walker wants to return West to East, the book is not so useful. Some West to East details (at the foot of the page?) would be good.

Get the guide, walk the Wall as a piece of history while you can: the Millenium Heritage Hadrian's Wall Trail due to open in 2002 will change the pleasure of this for ever, from a historical piece of detective walking to a through walker's tourist attraction!
