In New Zealand long walks are known as 'tramps' and this book describes the best of them. In North Island, three areas are described including the circuit of Mt Egmont, whilst in the more mountainous South Island there are five areas with eleven popular tracks including the famous Milford Track - one of the classic walks of the world. The author is particularly good at explaining the requirements for walking in New Zealand, the transport and types of accommodation available. New Zealand is one of the finest countries in the world to tour on foot. This island's diverse and scenic wild areas make it a paradise for the self-sufficient traveller, known variously as a tramper, backpacker, hiker or bushwalker. There is additional information on the geographic area of each track, its climate and weather and its history. Notes on each track also provide information on nearby accommodation, available tours or guiding, maps, special equipment needed, and access. This book is meant to encourage people of all ages and nationalities to enjoy the New Zealand country and tracks. Opportunities abound for anyone with a minimum of equipment, a sense of adventure, and a willing spirit.

Classic Tramps in New ZealandI wrote Classic Tramps in New Zealand after logging over 10 months walking times in New Zealand. There is splendid variety in the tramping areas of New Zealand: bush, glaciers, beach walks, mountain tops and everything in between. The huts are mostly self-service and rustic but loads of fun and a great way to meet other travelers. I have walked all of the tracks in the book personally, most of them twice. The country is inexpensive (once you get there), easy to get around and food and lodging are reasonably priced. A big plus is the laid back life-style and naturally friendly New Zealander's. I hope my book helps to guide you in this very special country.
