Product Description

Product Description

Though relatively modest in terms of altitude and extent, the Picos are, in fact, unique among Europe's mountains in a number of ways: geologically, for being the largest single mass of mountain limestone in the continent; geographically, for being the only true maritime range Europe possesses; and sociologically, for retaining even to this day a large part of the culture that has for centuries been the basis of life in the towns and villages dotted around the area. The first section of the book deals with background information such as geology, flora, fauna and history; and the second half describes the routes, which have been divided into two main groups (valley based routes and mountain routes), and provides sections on multi-day tours and winter mountaineering.

About the Author

Like so many people that love the mountains I began at an early age. As a family we holidayed in the Pennines, and later at secondary school two brave and generous teachers took a group of us climbing. Weekends in the Lakes became a way of life, and from there I went on to walk and climb throughout Britain, all spiced with the usual sorties abroad. In 1981, however, I got the chance to work in Spain, and what began as a year 'off' ended up as a total change. The whole of northern Spain is mountainous, and the chance to explore the region was too good to miss, and I decided to stay. As a climber the walls of the Picos de Europa drew my attention at first, culminating in Walks and Climbs in the Picos de Europa. Slowly, however, repeated trips to the Cordillera CantA brica led me to grasp the potential of this hugely underrated range for mountain walking, and gave to Walking in the Cordillera Cantabrica.

1.0 out of 5 stars no good for hikers, 4 Aug 2003
By Mr Andreas Mayer (London United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I bought this book because I am off to do some walking in the Picos soon and it was the only one that really seemed to cover hikes in the area. Well, I was wrong. It seems to cover climbs in some detail, but the walks are simply mentioned in short paragraphs, no maps or anything.

5.0 out of 5 stars But a good introduction to climbs, 8 Dec 2006
By John Wakeman (Corwen, Wales) - See all my reviews

It's true this is not primarily a walking guide - it's a climbing guide. It's not a badly written climbing guide - it seems to be quite an well considered introduction to the Picos for climbers. So this is a grade for what it is, rather than for what it is not.

1.0 out of 5 stars Might be good for climbers, no good for walkers, 9 Jan 2009
there is no disguising the fact this book was written originaly if not actualy in then in the style of the fifties. We got it, went through it (did a bit of comparison with what little we know already) and threw it away in disgust.
