Product Description

Product Description
Unlike most of the Cumbrian and Welsh peaks, the majority of these mountains do not have paths or walkers' tracks up them, but the many excellent stalker's paths takes one deep into wild territory and often gives a flying start to an ascent. Walkers in Torridon have to accustom themselves to free-ranging over heather, grass, rock and marsh. In the sketch maps, stalker's and the other paths are shown as broken lines, the recommended free-ranging routes are shown as dotted lines. Most of the expeditions assume that you have transport, and those which do not require it are indicated and are written as though Shieldaig is the starting point. The 'climbs' often involve descending again by the route of your ascent, which builds in a considerable safety factor if you are new to the area and also the comfort and pleasure of returning over now familiar territory.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential for Walkers in Torridon, 6 April 2007
By Mr. Ross Maynard (Glasgow, Scotland) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This book offers two major benefits to the serious walker visiting Torridon: a very large range of walks; and beautifully clear descriptions and directions. The book covers over 50 walks in the Torridon area, and is the best single source of serious walks in the area that I have seen. Ten of the walks are easy; ten are moderate (still fairly demanding); and over 30 are mountain walks covering all (I think) the mountains and hills in Glen Torridon and nearby. Mr Barton has an excellent writing style, with a quirky and entertaining twist. The book is also the perfect size for fitting in your pocket and taking with you. Combined with Nick William's book "The Northern Highlands" you have all you need here for a great many wonderful (and tiring) days out.
