I have just purchased a series III Land Rover for use off road at the weekends. I didnt really fully understand what I was getting myself into until I purchased this book, it describes in very good detail various off road driving techniques, preparing your vehicle for off road use ie underbody guards waterproofing etc and also recovery techniques using a variety of different equipment like hi-lift jacks and winchs. I have found this book very helpful over the past few weeks and have gained confidence while off road due to knowing the "correct" way to do things. It seems to be more Land Rover orientated than anything else but does have a section on all of the other vehicles available and their plus and negative points which may be helpful for anyone looking at buying a 4x4.
