Review

"'The Dead Yard is compelling crime fiction at its finest! McKinty is an exciting new talent, and Michael Forsythe is a hero that other writers can only aspire to create' Ed McBain 'McKinty's literate, expertly crafted third crime novel... confirms his place as one of his generation's leading talents... McKinty possesses a talent for pace and plot structure that belies his years. Dennis Lehane fans will definitely be pleased' Publisher's Weekly 'A wild, riveting roller-coaster of a read' Irish Independent 'A pacy, assured and thoroughly engaging debut... this is a hard-boiled crime story written by a gifted man with poetry coursing through his veins and thrilling writing dripping from his fingertips' Sunday Independent"

Product Description

It's been five years since Michael Forsythe slaughtered Darkey White and his crew of thugs in Harlem. Five years spent in the Witness Protection Program with a price on his head and not much to do with his days. Allowed to take a holiday at last, Michael heads to Spain, but he's arrested after a football riot between Irish and Brits and brought to a Spanish prison. Enter British intelligence agent Samantha Caudwell, who offers Michael a deal: spend ten years in jail under new riot laws, or go on a special assignment to infiltrate an IRA sleeper cell in New England. As The Dead Yard unfolds, Michael insinuates himself into the terror cell's inner circle. He crosses and double-crosses, escapes his own lies by a hair's breadth, falls in love, kills, and kills, and kills again.

2.0 out of 5 stars Quite exciting in places, 8 Feb 2007
This is Mc Kinty's follow-up to 'Dead I May Well Be' and follows his character, Michael Forsythe, from the farcical opening scene of an English-Irish soccer hooligan riot in Spain, back to the USA. Forsythe is blackmailed by the British Intelligence Services to infiltrate a dissident Irish-Republican cell in the US, who are plotting to disrupt the fledgling Peace Process underway in Northern Ireland in the mid 1990s.

The ease with which Forsythe infiltrates and tricks this cell in a matter of a few short weeks is quite unbelievable and has left a sour taste in my mouth with regard to the plot. So, either the facts are being stretched, or the cell are so stupid, naiive, and culpable (which would really question the unease felt by the British that they might pose to peace in Northern Ireland). The cell are an extended family unit, which also calls into question the authenticity of such a plotline.

What action there is is quite well crafted, and some of the characters are interesting, especially the alluring young Kitt and 'Touched' - the heaviest of the heavies. Another positive is that Mc Kinney's prose is easy to read - if you can keep reading past the opening scene's Anglo-Irish soccer riot that is.

I read it because Mc Kinty's previous novel 'Dead I May Well Be' was quite well-received and I was also intrigued by the fictional idea of an Irish-American dissident IRA cell, but to be honest it was dissappointing overall and didn't live up to my hopes and expectations. If you really want to read a better comparable book in the genre of IRA terrorism, then read 'Harry's Game'.

5.0 out of 5 stars A sympathetic murderer, 11 Sep 2009
By Hollywit (Cheshire, UK) - See all my reviews
A newspaper review of another book by McKinty intrigued me so I ordered The Dead Yard Trilogy as well. I found the books fascinating. The 'hero'is amusing, attractive, arouses your sympathy - but definitely on the wrong side of the law and can kill three or four people at a time coolly and efficiently. The author gives enough background to show how this personality has been conditioned and stresses the individual's responsiility for his own survival.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adrian McKinty has written another stunning book, 3 Mar 2009

(REAL NAME)
It is quite simple: there is no crime novelist who is writing as well as McKinty at the moment. The Dead Yard is the second in a trilogy and is a close match to his first - Dead I Well May Be - in terms of the quality of the prose.

McKinty has an incredible ability to draw the reader in with the realism of his writing style. There is lots of violence in this book but it melds wonderfully with beautiful, sensitive passages.

The plot is gripping and the main character is compelling: it's one to buy.
Alan
