Two men on opposite sides of a blurred line have more in common than they think. 5.0 out of 5 stars Rollicking Good Read!, 20 Sep 2004
By A reader (Brighton, UK) - See all my reviews
I read Tony Saint' first book 'Refusal Shoes' and enjoyed it as a funny insight into a world we all think we know about but really don't. But with his second novel, there's no question he's moved on. We are still in the world of immigration but now it's out on the streets around us (South London to be exact) where it's hard to tell who's more desperate - the chased or the chasers.

Harry Verma is a low-life immigration lawyer, who gambles too much and hides what he really does from his family. Against him is Sean Carlyle, who works for immigration but has big problems of his own. Dead set against each other, they both gradually come to realise that their lives are more connected than they thought.

The plot twists and turns nicely and the author is excellent at pointing out the lies and inconsistency that crop up on both sides of the immigration debate. But,as with his first book, it is in the characters and dialogue that he really shines, giving us a funny yet really believeable snapshot of the nutters and losers who blag themselves into situations they can't blag themselves out of.

Looking forward to his next one.
