Review
'I never miss a book by Vicki Hendricks. No one on the current scene is writing supercharged, erotic, real noir novels like these. Think Jack London, James M.Cain, and Colette. Sky Blues is another Hendricks triumph.' George P.Pelecanos; 'No one writes better about white trash gone bad than Hendricks' Guardian
Hendricks thrills her readers with a mixture of sex and danger. Destiny Donne has worked hard to achieve her ambition, a veterinarian practice in Florida's sugar-cane country. She routinely checks exotic creatures like iguanas to see whether they are male or female, spends days at Lion Country zoo carrying out faecal tests and is fearless when faced with sick rhinos. She loves animals but even a dream come true can pall when a woman gets lonely, so when a startlingly handsome guy in ostrich-skin boots brings a lion cub into her surgery he only has to flash his blue eyes for her to feel attracted. In no time at all Des and Tom Jenks are seeing a great deal of each other. Erotic scene follows erotic scene, but there are more excitements to come. Tom introduces Des to sky-diving and her airgasms - Hendricks's word - become as addictive as her orgasms. These are the best passages in the book, vivid, well written and perfectly conveying the heroine's passion for risk. But soon danger threatens from another source and legal fun stumbles into horrifyingly illegal territory. As the plot spirals into a tense denouement the reader can see the traps to which Des is wilfully blind. Told in the present tense and the first person, this book sets out to hook the reader from page one. A noir novel indeed with a very blurred line between morality and sin, enjoyment and perversion.
