Review
Hedonism is really only interesting when it's you being hedonistic. Other people's tends to grate after just a short while, like being sober in a room full of drunks. So the first part of Hendricks's new novel did tend to drag a little. Punch is 40-something and dying from diabetes, a bad liver and booze. Juliette, the narrator, is in her early 20s and adores him. So much so, that she has agreed a suicide pact when he finishes the novel he's writing about their crazy life of sex, alcohol, drugs and petty crime in Key West, Florida. So far, so what? But then the crime gets heavy and guns become involved and the book takes off like a rocket. The last two thirds are terrific with an excellent ending. Persevere with this one and it's well worth the effort. (Kirkus UK)
