4.0 out of 5 stars A surreal and sombre moral journey, in a poetic voice., 7 Sep 2000
By eldevri@yahoo.co.uk (The Netherlands) - See all my reviews
Herta Muller 'The Passport' is very dark surreal and sombre- which stretches out into a distinct feeling of suspenseful discomfort and disorientation. It is a sea of daring poetic metaphor which still manages to keep the reader in the characters heads. It's like a special Eastern magical realism it works perfectly with the poetry of the folklore and yet she paints an authoritatively realistic picture of Romanian village life. The piece is slowly dramatic, and laden with a such obscure moralism that it had me transported into a different way of life. In 'The passport' there is always a feeling that anything- really anything- could happen.

2.0 out of 5 stars I was lost in an abstract narrative, 15 Nov 2009
Yes this book is infused with plenty of surrealist, imaginative, poetic prose but I found myself getting lost at several junctures because the narrative was too abstract and esoteric.

The backdrop is very forlorn and depressing. The mood is of hopelessness. In this regard, I did feel echos of something like: Cormac McCarthy's 'The Road'. But overall, it just was not my cup of tea. Even though I found the writing style clever and original, I just found it hard to differentiate between something that might be an allegory, a stream of inner conciousness or something literal. This made the narrative obtuse. But, I could certainly see those who fancy something from the high brow shelf enjoying this.
