Product Description

Newscientist, 30/11/2002

'Mission to Saturn is superbly illustrated, well referenced and an eminently readable book.'

Product Description

Saturn is back in the news! The Cassini/Huygens spacecraft, a joint venture by NASA and the European Space Agency, is on its way to Saturn, where it will arrive in July 2004. During 2005 it will explore beneath the clouds of Titan, Saturn's largest moon and potential home for extraterrestrial life. Written by an established space historian and experienced author, Mission To Saturn - Cassini and the Huygens Probe is an up-to-date and timely review of our knowledge of Saturn and its enigmatic moon, Titan, on which the Huygens probe will land to search for prebiotic chemistry or even life. It explains how the mission was planned, how it will operate and, as the spacecraft nears its target, puts into context the discoveries that are sure to follow from this once-in-a-lifetime mission.

I admit I am very interested in this subject and I am prepared to overlook certain inadequacies. Overall the book achieved its objective. However, the author often uses acronyms without explaining them. While the pictures are interesting, it’s a bit mean in a book like this not having some in colour & more of them.

75% of the book is a review of what is already known about Saturn and the history of how it became known so the title is a bit misleading. Only 70 pages are about the mission itself.

I think it would be a difficult book for the layman as most of the science is assuming a science background or at least a strong interest in Astronomy.

I would have thought that more links to the web and even including a PC DVD or CD could have made this a unique experience. For such a expensive & important mission, a book that makes use of all up to date technological material to communicate far more technical information to the reader would be ideal.

I enjoyed the book and wish there were more books like this, but it is for the anorak brigade!
