Product Description

Product Description

Skylab is not just a story of space hardware and space science, but also of space explorers and pioneers. Using official NASA documentation and interviews with the astronauts and key personnel, the inside story of Skylab is presented as the story unfolds. An evaluation of the lessons learnt from the programme and how these were, or were not, incorporated into the Space Shuttle and Space Station programme is also offered to present the value of Skylab in the context of the current programme, 25 years after the last crew came home.

4.0 out of 5 stars An informative look at an almost forgotten triumph, 9 Jan 2002
By A Customer
If there's one problem with this book, its that its written more like a report, than like the fascinating story that the Skylab project surely was.

Launched in one piece on the last Saturn V rocket, Skylab was a massive piece of flight hardware. No one module of Mir or the ISS has anywhere near the same living space. Indeed, as this book documents, astronauts were able to test maneovuring units *inside* the space station.

This book exhaustively documents design, launch and eventual destruction of the space-station and includes details on all three manned missions, the planned rescue missions, the cancellation of the completed Skylab B and finally the failure of the shuttle to be ready in time to save the empty workshop from hurtling into Australia.

If you're at all interested in the Skylab project, and the work the astronauts accomplished (in particular, the recovery of the space station from damage caused by the launch) then this book is highly recommended. The only problems are the style - I would have preferred more of a 'story' stlye, and the lack of photographs - more of Skylab's intererior would have been nice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book., 12 Oct 2007

I really enjoyed, Skylab: America's Space Station
by David Shayler, but having said that any book from Springer-Praxis is also great!

Full of interesting technical detail, and as a real space 'buff' this is great! But if you are a casual reader - looking for something about the people rather than the machines - then this is perhaps not for you.
