5.0 out of 5 stars Superb volume in Springer-Praxis astronomy series, 18 Sep 2007
By Philip Corneille (BELGIUM & CROATIA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Excellent book which explains the most important tasks that astronomers face: distance determination in the Universe. The book starts out with distance on Earth and in the solar system. It continues to the stars in our Galaxy and out ward to the Local Group, the group in which our Galaxy/MilkyWay belongs. Next step are the more distant galaxies and the importance of Type I and Type II supernovae. The last chapters are on the Hubble constant and the expansion of the Universe. The book has numerous B&W photos of astronomers and each chapter has questions and problems at the end.
The book describes new observational techniques and has an appendix on naming astronomical objects. A large bibliographie of both books, magazines and journals completes this superb book. A must have for the serious amateur astronomer and astrophysics/Astronomy graduate!
Philip Corneille
