Product Description

Product Description

Many amateur astronomers make their own instruments, either because of financial considerations or because they are just interested. Amateur Telescope Making offers a variety of designs for telescopes, mounts and drives which are suitable for the home-constructor. The designs range from simple to advanced, but all are within the range of a moderately well-equipped home workshop. The book not only tells the reader what he can construct, but also what it is sensible to construct given what time is available commercially. Thus each chapter begins with reasons for undertaking the project, then looks at theoretical consideration before finishing with practical instructions and advice. An indication is given as to the skills required for the various projects. Appendices list reputable sources of (mail order) materials and components. The telescopes and mounts range from "shoestring" (very cheap) instruments to specialist devices that are unavailable commercially.

From the Author

Fifteen Projects for the modern Amateur Telescope Maker
Despite the title, this multi-contributor book is about a lot more than just making telescopes. The 15 projects, each presented by someone who has actually built it, are in four sections:

# Shoestring Telescopes; three telescopes which can be built for minimum monetary outlay.

# Specialised Telescopes; five telescopes, each of which is optimised for a specific purpose.

# Mounts; a mount for binoculars and mounts which enable photography with dobsonians.

# Astrophotography; camera mounts, a CCD camera, and a drive-motor controller... not intended as a replacement for other modern ATM books, but rather as a supplement. It does not cover optical work and testing, or modern "dobsonian technology", all of which are adequately covered in some excellent current publications listed in the bibliography. _Amateur Telescope Making_ can be used either as an instruction manual for the projects therein or as a source of ideas for your own next project. Although many of the projects will be within the capabilities of a beginner, some, particularly the specialised telescopes, would be better attempted by someone with some ATM experience. END

1.0 out of 5 stars For Professional Amateurs Only, 19 Feb 2001
By A Customer
I bought this book in the hope that it would guide me through building a telescope with detailed plans and part lists (with suppliers IN THE UK), however, after reading the first section on building shoestring telescopes I found the information insufficient and unhelpful, the later chapters were too ambitious for my below-amateur status. What an amateur needs is a step-by-step guide to building a telescope, not a short rambling chapter... In summary this book tells the reader more about the author than about the process of building a telescope. Maybe I'm just too much of an amateur, but I will be looking elsewhere for guidance...

2.0 out of 5 stars Collection of magazine-type articles, 11 Jul 2001
Each chapter is written by a different author, covering widely different topics in a brief, superficial way. It doesn't provide what it advertises in the title, although an interesting read in places.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent supplementary ATM book, 15 Mar 2001
By A Customer
If you have some ATM experience, or if you are looking for inspiration, then this is a very good book. It does not cover basic optical work because, as the editor says in the introduction, this is very well covered elsewhere. Get Texereau for this. Some of the projects will require you to use your own imagination and creativity. Others, particularly the mounts and drives, walk you through in great detail. At the other end of the scale, some of the optical projects are not for the squeamish! This book is a supplement, not a substitute, to a collection of modern ATM literature.
