5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for anyone who listens to music, 5 May 2009
I discovered this book by chance many years ago. It was written in the 1970s, so the musical examples are a little out of date, and some of the discussions of music are also a little perfunctory and seem to be added for completeness rather than written from the author's real experience.

But the essential thing about this book is that it opens up really vital areas of understanding and appreciation. The minor shortcomings I mentioned above matter little when set against the book's real values.

This book made me aware of a whole range of different music that was virtually unknown at the time. Some of it, such as Balinese Gamelan, is now much more mainstream, but Hamel has a way of entering into the depths of the music he discusses and bringing out its real essence. I found myself opening up in new ways to Minimalist music after reading this book, Indian music made more sense, and the music of other cultures was far more accessible when I heard it than it would have been without my having read Hamel's book.

The book really opens up the ways we can listen to and experience music, and it makes us ask really vital questions to ourselves about what we listen to and what music can be for us. I would have been a musician anyway without reading Through Music to the Self. But reading it was a milestone in my development both as a musician and as a human being, and it took me several stages further and deeper and probably saved me a few years of unaided and floundering development by clearly showing what's what. It should be recommended reading for every music course.
