2.0 out of 5 stars Unlike the player this book was very average, 5 Aug 2003
By A Customer
A very bias book that was often repetetive, often whole paragraphs were copied verbatim at different stages of the book. I found that far to many of the stories concering Jim Baxters antics were used more than once in different contexts and to illustrate different points that the author wanted to make. I know that Jim Baxter was a Scottish hero but I also found the text to be very anti English and in particular anti Sunderland. For die hard English hating Rangers fans only!

4.0 out of 5 stars An incredibly flawed legend, 1 Sep 2003
By Craig (Glasgow, Scotland) - See all my reviews
Like any Scot I grew up hearing of this great player - Scotlands most skilled ever - who threw it all away for his love of booze & gambling. If George Best needed an example then this guy had done it all before and more.

The famous Wembley game of 1967 when Baxter would rather play keepie-uppie - "lets take the piss out of them" - than push for more goals against the new World Champions. He was a supremely confident player.

In some respects the story has been told before through many tabloid tales, so some famous anecdotes are already well known, though still hilarious.

What Gallacher does well is piece the stories together and show how Baxter was allowed to go off the rails, as long as he produced the goods on the pitch, until the monster created went on to destroy himself.

An interesting and amusing tale of a tragic loss to the game of football but Baxter's wish to do it his way prevailed.
