This book provides a fascinating account of the various characters, both equine and human, who populate Newmarket's racing history.
On the equine front, all the great flat horses are there: Flying Childers, Eclipse, St. Simon, Persimmon, Pretty Polly, Hyperion and Nijinsky, to name but a few. What the author evokes most successfully is the graceful acceleration and will to win of the champion thoroughbred. Even the racing philistine when exposed to such beauty and nobility cannot fail to be moved. For the genuine racing fan, to witness such brilliance is absolutely humbling.
The book also presents humourous and well-researched penpictures of the various patrons, trainers, jockeys and other "horse" people associated with Newmarket from the beginning of the 17th Century to the present day. Some of these characters are rogues, many more display roguish inclinations when the money is down. The worlds of Charles 11, Charles James Fox, Lord Bentinck, Matt Dawson, Fred Archer, Edward VI, Lord Derby and Prince Aly Khan are brought vividly to life. Stories of various high-profile intrigues, be they betting coups, doping scandals or murders are also recounted in fascinating detail. In fact, one of the lasting impressions is of everything changing, yet everything staying the same down through the ages. The champion thoroughbred overcomes all such troubles hurled in his or her path.
The constant dilemna of how to fund this most costly of sports without compromising its integrity is a theme that the author alludes to throughout the book. She is forthright in her views as to where the boundaries of democracy within the sport should be set. The issues of betting revenue, racecourse facilities provision and management, and patronage are addressed in a most insightful manner. Common sense and an honest appraisal of the evidence informs such views. The passion which she undoubtedly has for the sport shines through.
Altogether, this was a thoroughly enjoyable read.
