Amazon.co.uk Review

When Tina Turner's autobiography I, Tina was published, Ike Turner found himself accused of years of serial adultery, drug addiction and domestic violence and was shunned by his music business peers and a whole generation of music fans. Following what he himself calls his "15-year party" in which he slipped into a downward spiral of narcotics abuse and self-hatred, he eventually hit rock bottom and ended up behind bars.

Now he's back and ready to tell his own story. From his childhood in the racist depths of the Deep South, where he lost his virginity at the age of six to a middle-aged neighbour and then married "eight or nine times" before he met Little Anne Bullock--the woman he renamed Tina--and accompanied her on the path to superstardom before the rot really set in, Ike Turner has certainly led one hell of a life.

This autobiography perhaps tells us little that we didn't already know about the man who became more famous for beating up a superstar than for his own work, but it does give Ike the opportunity to come clean about the reputation that has dogged him for so many years and proves that he is ready to make amends and face up to whatever the future may hold.An extraordinary, fascinating and, indeed, sensational book about an extraordinary, fascinating and, indeed, sensational life, Takin' Back Time is a classic rock autobiography that certainly does not try to excuse the man from his past actions, but instead goes some way to explaining them. --Susan Harrison

5.0 out of 5 stars He Survived, 7 April 2002
When Tina's book and it's subsequent movie were released Ike quickly became one of the most notorious and despised figures in the music industry. His talent was quickly forgotten, or worse ignored.
I first bought this book as I was curious to whether he would have a hope in hell of defending himself.
The answer was neither yes or no as the decision lies purely with the reader. This book doesn't excuse any of Ike's past but it goes a long way in explaining some of his actions.
Ike was exposed to so much sex and violence at such an early age, it is possible to understand why he acted the way he did.
I, for one, admire him for writing this book, knowing it wouldn't do much to enhance his reputation.
It probably would've been far easier for him to just lash out, laying all the blame at Tina's door, (after all, that's exactly what she did. Even though she chose to stay for 18 yrs, so was Ike really that bad? I don't think so).
There's a certain humanity in that and a wisdom
that only comes with age and experience.
Nobody, least of all Ike, is denying the pain he's caused Tina, his kids or anyone else in the past. But any decent, open-minded person can see he has his own demons to face and that is what this book is doing. It's not about retaliation.
Even at this late stage in his life he is learning about love and success.
Tina was given her second chance, to build a new life and career away from Ike and her past.
Now all he wants is he chance to do the same.
Should anyone deny him that?.
Good Luck Ike. I hope things work out for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!, 15 April 2000
By A Customer
A really excellent read from Nigel Cawthorne: well, researched with a smooth, elegant prose style, this book deserves to find a place on the shelves of even non music lovers. Well done Nigel!
