Amazon.co.uk Review

The Glory of Goodwood is an absolute classic. It is a lavish pictorial celebration of the world famous circuit--steeped in history and treasured by so many who have been lucky enough to sample the atmosphere from behind the wheel or from the grandstands.

Every pastime has its own spiritual home--cricket has Lord's, for football there is Wembley, while motor racing enthusiasts will tell you Goodwood is the place.

Among the long and distinguished list of famous drivers who have tested and pitted their skills at the challenging circuit are Jackie Stewart, Sir Jack Brabham, Striling Moss and Damon Hill, who all give their insight into what makes Goodwood so magical and unique.

The talents of Mike Lawrence, Simon Taylor and Doug Nye shine through the glossy pages and their undoubted knowledge, passion and attention to detail are complemented by the powerful photographs and images which adorn every page. The book captures the romance and charts the role of the post-war British motor racing venue from its beginnings, through the good and bad times, to the apparent end of the road in 1966.

But like all good stories, and not without heartache, the dream to recreate the Goodwood of 1948 was, 50 years later, realised and for a few sunny days in September 1998 the good old days roared back to life.

The Glory of Goodwood is a lasting tribute to all who worked so hard to rekindle the nostalgia and give so many others the chance to share their achievement and experiences. --Andrea Bullock

Product Description

A guide to the Goodwood motor circuit, and a celebration of its eventful history and atmosphere. The best drivers of their day - Hawthorn, Brabham, Clark, Moss and Hill - went head to head around Goodwood's famous corners. Alongside the action on the track, Goodwood's very British blend of style, hospitality and derring-do became part of the social fabric of the 1950s and 1960s. The story of Goodwood is brought to life by cherished memories from the great drivers who competed there, including Stirling Moss and Jackie Stewart, as well as more recent arrivals like Damon Hill describing the excitement of racing around Goodwood in a historic car. The book is illustrated with nostalgic images from the Goodwood archives.

By A Customer
The enthusiastic scepticism of Mike Lawrence, the historical eye of Doug Nye and the interviewing skills of Simon Taylor combine to make this a fascinating social and racing history of the Goodwood circuit. It's probably Mike's best book yet (though I seem to say that about everything he writes); his dry wit and eye for a curious anecdote makes the main text of the book superb reading. Taylor's interviews counterpoint the text perfectly.

If the text stood alone this would still be a superb book; however, it's beautifully presented (a large-format book with superb photographic reproduction, containing a mixture of period illustrations and recent photos from the Revival meeting in '98. (My only minor quibble is these are sometimes intermixed rather arbitrarily... which is actually a compliment to the perfect period atmosphere the revival meeting creates!)

The photos will satisfy those who keep their racing books on the coffee table; the text those of us who keep them on the shelves. There really is something for everyone here. Buy it.
