5.0 out of 5 stars an insight into the life of bilko and co., 19 May 2001
I watched bilko as a boy and as a adult and have seen all eposides many times and they are a historical part of our culture, comedy at its best which is timeless and could always raise a laugh, watch bilko and his crew and forget everything else in life. This book by one of the bilko crew gives an insight into each star of the bilko show, from the lonely Dobberman to the sex mad sgt Rupert Ritzik. Im sure Zimmerman could have filled dozens of pages with anecdotes,in the book each one is a gem.I read the book in one reading and turned each page with anticipation and was never dissapointed. I found the short summary of each of the 142 eposides very helpful indeed as I could visualise the excerpts from memory. As the author says Bilko is always on some channel at some time each day of the week giving countless generations something very simple "a laugh"

4.0 out of 5 stars Great appetiser for Bilko fans....but what next ?, 3 Jul 2000
By A Customer
Being a true Bilko fan, this was always going to be a book for me. However, whilst I did enjoy Zimmermans back-room tales of Silvers on and off screen life, I wish I would have got a little bit more for my money! Many of the stories were quite new to me and did raise a laugh - and I now feel slightly closer to the real Bilko...and the real Silvers. One further result...I've started to re-watch all my old Bilko tapes (I've about 75 on video).

4.0 out of 5 stars A fine comprehensive study of a superb television show, 3 Jun 2000
By A Customer
The Phil Silvers Show, also known as Sergeant Bilko, or "You'll Never Get Rich," was one of the all-time greats as well as being a forerunner in the art of ensemble comedy. Mickey Freeman and Sholom Rubinstein have collaborated to put together a delightful retrospective consisting of thumbnail sketches of the main characters with many personal memories. Mickey, who still works as a stand-up comedian, sprinkles the text with his own quick wit. The last third of the book is a set of synopses in chronological order of each of the shows, in far more detail than has been done in any previous literature. This book is a must for fans of the show and comedy in general. In short, I had to read it in a single sitting, at the cost of a lot of sleep. It was well worth the effort, I only woke my wife twice by laughing too loudly.
