Product Description

Synopsis

In 1989, Doctor Who vanquished the villian for the last time on British screens. This book is an account of the last three years of televised Doctor Who as seen through the eyes of Sophie Aldred, who portrayed Ace, the Doctor's last TV companion, and Mike Tucker, one of the visual effects designers. It contains interviews with other actors and members of the production staff and anecdotes from location shoots and rehearsal rooms. Also included are photographs from private collections and from a specially commissioned photo shoot.

5.0 out of 5 stars A look back to late Eighties Who and it's greatest companion!, 31 May 2007
By LLJP (London, UK) - See all my reviews
Now out of print Ace!: The Inside Story of the End of an Era is a must have for any die-hard Doctor Who fan. Written by actress Sophie Aldred who played Ace between 1987-1989 when the series was cancelled and Mike Tucker that worked on visual effects and eventually co-wrote many Seventh Doctor and Ace novels with writing partner Robert Perry. The two of them share their memories of working on each episode. Fellow co-stars and crew also share memories. The book has a large amount of behind the scene photos, storyboards, detailed diagrams and features extensive coverage of each episode. The book is over 10 years old and features some out of date information but still is a great informative source. It is well worth the money and as I have already said a must have, for any die-hard fan as it covers perhaps the tenure of one of the best companions in the show's history. 5/5

5.0 out of 5 stars Ace indeed, 4 Mar 2009

Well I can only agree with the previous reviewer, this is a must have behind the scenes expose of the TV institution that is Doctor Who. Often derided as the 'pantomime years', and with falling ratings and lack of a clear future, the late 80s are now being seen for what they were: a new era that had promise but was overtaken by its contemporaries. Ace was indeed the spunkiest of The Timelord's companions; more intelligent than Rose Tyler, more interesting than Tegan Jovanka and more ballsy than Martha Jones. Get hold of this if you can!
